Sprains and Strains - what’s the difference

Sprains and strains are very common.  What’s the difference between a sprain and a strain?

A sprain occurs when you stretch or tear a ligament – the tissues that connect bone to one another.  Sprains are most common in the ankles, wrists and knees.  Symptoms: swelling, pain, bruising and difficulty moving the joint.

A strain happens when you stretch or tear a muscle or tendon – the connective tissues that attach muscle to bone.  Strains to the hamstrings and back are common.  Symptoms: pain, swelling, cramping, muscle weakness, spasms and difficulty moving the muscle.

You can treat minor sprains and strains at home.  However, it is important to treat the injury immediately after it happens.  The most common home treatment is known as R.I.C.E.

Rest the injured area.

Ice – Apply ice to the area for 15-30 minutes to reduce swelling, relieve pain and speed healing.

Compression – Apply a compression bandage such as an elastic wrap.  This helps to reduce swelling.  Be careful not to wrap to tightly as this can reduce blood flow.

Elevation – Raise the injured area above the level of the heart to reduce swelling.
