Call for Volunteers and Baked Goods
Volunteer Coordinators Food
- Michelle Poublon - m.poublon@comcast.net Our Applefest Half Marathon most likely will sell again this year. All of us in the Gate City Striders and our loyal community volunteers can be proud of our accomplishment of making Applefest one of the best fall races in the USA. This is the clubs largest fundraiser, which allows us to make sizable contributions to local area community groups in the area in which live and run. You, our club members and interested community based volunteers, have made Applefest go so smoothly in the past and we need your help again to keep Applefest the event people talk about all year . What can Volunteers do? You would be amazed at how easy and effective your help can be. While other assignments are listed below, a very important one is mentioned here. Quantity races don't just happen. In fact one of the most common failings of a road race is something that Runners notice and often distracts from all the other good that race does. Lack of attention to the runners while they are on the course is bad form. Having a volunteer noticeably at all course turns is SO helpful and SO effective. Please think about bringing a friend to help in this area. Committee positions: Gate City Strider members are welcome to join our Applefest committee. Unlike many committees, the Applefest committee members are all highly motivated so nobody is stuck with too many assignments. Its members return year after year because it is actually fun. However, we are always looking for someone to help with things we think we could do better if we had some more hands and minds. Race Day Assignments:
There are many things to do on race day. Come early, leave early,
come late stay late. There is a time and job for everyone. There are
jobs which require heading up a small crew and there are jobs on the
crews. Here are just some of the jobs that need to be done on race
weekend. Friday -Day and Evening Saturday - RACE Day *Manning registration tables and shirt and gear bag pickup *Start/Finish line setup *Parking and traffic control *Course setup, traffic cones, mile markers, arrow signs. *Bus monitors *Water stop management. While we have many stops, the manager is responsible for only one(1) stop. This is the delivery of water, cups and setup of tables and requires a pickup truck or mini-van. You are NOT responsible for getting the water stop people to and from you stop. We need 4 such managers. *Overall Water Stop Logistics. Here your are responsible for helping the water stop gear and stuff load on the trucks and on their way early. (Then you can help with something else [grin]) *Clydesdale and Filly weigh-in *Finish line - This is also a very important area. Help runners stay in finish chute until they get into chip corral. Help runners remove chips if needed. Hand out solar blankets. Hand out finisher medals. *Hand out water at stops 2, 12 and finish line. *Help in food tent Baked Goods: You can either help with the event or by baking some offerings for our fabulous refreshment tent. We need all the cookies, banana breads, etc. members can donate. Please drop off baked goods at the food tent before 10am on race morning. Alternate arrangements for food drop off will be posted closer to race day If you would like to volunteer yourself or know of other individual or groups who would like to volunteer please contact our volunteer coordinator.
